Hallmarks of Our Care

Philosophy

Our experience and training have prepared us to navigate the modern maternity care system and to identify when medical technology and expertise is needed. Our philosophy, however, is grounded in traditional birth wisdom.

We believe in…

the inherent power of birthing bodies

~

safeguarding the birth experience as a natural, physiologic event

~

evidence-based care with the judicious use of technology and medical intervention

~

deconstructing the perception of pregnancy as a pathological condition; demedicalizing the birth experience

~

validating home birth as a safe option for low-risk, healthy people; breaking down barriers to out-of-hospital midwifery care

~

empowering individuals and families to make choices in pregnancy, labor, and birth that give their babies the best start possible

~

providing support and care that honors the holistic nature of the childbearing year

~

Midwifery Model of Care

As midwives, we practice in accordance with the Midwifery Model of Care, which includes:

  • Monitoring the physical, psychological and social well-being of the client through the childbearing cycle

  • Providing clients with individualized education, counseling, and prenatal care, continuous hands-on assistance during labor and delivery, and postpartum support

  • Minimizing technological interventions

  • Identifying and referring clients who require obstetrical attention

Informed Choice

Informed choice is a cornerstone of the Midwifery Model of Care. Throughout the course of prenatal care, we spend time discussing the benefits & risks of upcoming testing options. Clients are provided with comprehensive, non-biased information, and given ample opportunities to have their questions answered and concerns addressed. So long as a particular procedure isn’t clinically indicated, a client may decline routine testing opportunities. The spirit of informed choice honors client autonomy and the collaborative nature of the shared decision-making model.
